I’ve been thinking a lot about burnout in high-consequence technology, and it’s starting to feel familiar in an uncomfortable way. We’ve been here before, during the early DevOps era, when faster feedback loops, always-on systems, and blurred lines between roles delivered real gains, but also left behind a kind of organizational scar tissue we never fully addressed. Now, with AI, the pace feels even more intense. Expectations are rising faster than clarity, systems are becoming less predictable, and the pressure to keep up is palpable. We’re starting to see pieces of the conversation, like cognitive load, SRE lessons, and AI ethics, but not much that connects them to the day-to-day human cost of operating these systems. It raises a bigger question: what would it look like to treat human sustainability with the same rigor as system reliability, before the cycle repeats itself?

Are We Headed Toward Another Burnout Cycle with AI?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about burnout in high-consequence technology, and I’m starting to get concerned again. Burnout has always been part of our industry, but during the early DevOps days, we exposed a lot of scar tissue. Faster feedback loops, always-on systems, and blurred lines between development and operations came with a real human cost. I don’t think we’ve fully reckoned with that period.
Now with AI, I’m wondering if we’re heading into a similar cycle, possibly faster.
The pace is intense. Expectations are rising, but not always clear. There’s pressure to keep up or risk falling behind. And for many teams, the systems we’re building and operating are less predictable than what we’re used to.
So I started looking into who is thinking about this. What I’m finding is pieces, but not a full picture:
Work on cognitive load and platform engineering aimed at reducing the burden on engineers
Lessons from SRE around incident response and burnout
Growing discussion around AI ethics and safety
But not much connects these ideas to the human cost of running AI systems day to day. We are still mostly framing AI as a productivity tool, not something that changes the psychological demands on teams.
It feels like we might be missing a chance to get ahead of this. What would it look like to treat human sustainability with the same seriousness as system reliability? What would leading indicators for burnout look like? How do we make “no heroics” real in AI operations? I don’t have a clear answer, but I think this is a conversation worth having now, not later.
